EUROPEAN MEETING OF AGROFORESTRY
DECEMBER 16th – PARIS

AGROFORESTRY IN THE WORLD :

The French Agroforestry Association (AFAF) and its European partners have been working together for thirty years to develop agroforestry. Research and development, experimentations and farmers’ involvement have led to optimize sustainable and competitive agroforestry systems which are based on ancestral practices.

In a context in which we will have to optimize production on plots, preserve environment, and ensure the viability of farms, trees, by their agro-ecological functions,  once again appear to be one of the key actors of innovative agricultural systems, which will answer the challenges of the new CAP.

Nowadays, the advantages linked to the development of agroforestry do not need to be presented anymore and there is a clear demand from farmers as well as from public structures.

The recent evolutions of the European regulations showed real progress, however they did not meet full expectations. What mainly hampers the implementation of agroforestry lies in the complexity of approaches, the lack of harmony in support measures, and the lack of assistance and information for farmers.

A EUROPEAN DAY :

In the context of the CAP deadline in 2013, and to commemorate the International Year of Forests, the European partners have decided to join together and initiate a dialogue on a European level in order to propose solutions for trees to be considered in next regulations and create the first European Agroforestry structure.

This event, which will occur on December, 16th 2011 in Paris, enjoys the support of both the Ministry of Agriculture (MAAPRAT) and the Ministry of Sustainable Development (MEDDTL), as well as the Permanent Assembly of Chambers of Agriculture (APCA).
